It isn't that Arthur doesn't trust Eames.

And that's saying something, really. Given his ability to forge in dreams or on paper, and his repeated proximity to Arthur, Eames is a definite threat. But it's how quiet Eames is that really.... unsettles Arthur. (Other than Eames' penchant humming Burton Cummings' songs under his breath while forging documents)

Eames is a watchful quiet - content to lean in a doorway, sit in a cafe or bar, ride on a bus and watch people. He is frighteningly good at blending in to surroundings. Arthur still can't believe that Eames quietly insinuated himself into Fischer's inner offices (gorgeously tailored suit aside). A man as big as Eames shouldn't be so quiet.

Arthur will argue back and forth with Dom, will easily talk with Ariadne, question Yusuf and take up Dom's argument with Saito. And he cannot manage to let Eames explain anything without interrupting him with commentary. But Eames will ignore Dom, smile at Saito, communicate solely in smirks with Yusuf, and guide Ariadne with a gentle touch to her arm.

Eames kicks Arthur's chair out from under him, covers Arthur with gunfire, watches him tip over and wake up again and again. He is quietly declarative. "That is a kick" or "Dream a little bigger". And what the hell is Arthur supposed to make of a quietly appended "Darling" or a final exhortation to "Make it back before the drop"?

Afterwards, on the plane, at the luggage carousel, Eames is quiet. Watchful. He disappears first, fades into the background of LAX while Dom makes it through customs. Arthur fidgets with his die while Dom leaves with his father in law,  asks Ariadne if she has cab fare, nods to Saito who follows a driver, sends a text to Yusuf.

And that evening, finally in his hotel room, startled, he pulls a gun on the shadowed man sitting quietly in his hotel room's armchair.

Arthur knows it's Eames by the quality of silence, and after flicking on the lights, and setting his gun on the dresser, beside a note with what looks like Arthur's signature requesting a room key for his partner, after securing two tumblers and unscrewing his bottle of scotch, Arthur settles on the bed.

Eames sits quietly, the whole time.

"You watch me." Arthur finally declares softly.

"I thought I would dream a little bigger" Eames replies.

Later, Eames isn't quiet at all. They turn the lights out, and Eames closes his eyes.

It isn't that Arthur completely trusts Eames. Not yet. But he remembers that sometimes forging is shaping anew.

Oh, this is nice -- it's quiet and lovely and says a lot without saying everything.

eeee, I really like this. It's a take on Eames that I've always had, from my first (few) watchings of Inception, but which fanon tends to overwrite with the loud, brash Eames. I've been convinced of it ever since we met him in Mombasa, and he's talking to Cobb but his eyes are all. over. the place. Watching everything, taking it in and totally knowing what to do with it.

Just like this. :D
