The forest was chill and dark in the twilight. The trunks of the nearest birch trees were splattered with blood, the iron tinge in the air. The only sounds were the quiet ripple of a nearby spring and Raidou shouting desparately.
“Genma! Dammit. GENMA! Wake the fuck up Gen!”
Too much of the blood on the white birch bark was Genma’s. Raidou had fought to get to Gen’s side… had cut down the three surprised Mist Nins in his way once he’d seen his partner take some sort of razor attack hit. But Genma was down on the forest floor, and there was too much fucking blood.
“Genma. Gen!” Raidou’s throat choked with fear as Genma lay in his lap unresponsive. Blood was slick and slowly cooling on Raidou’s hands where they pressed against the worst wounds on Genma’s neck and face. Genma was pale, and his breathing was slowing to a uneven rattle.
Raidou shifted, and slid Genma off his legs and onto the forest floor. Spreading his right hand to apply pressure to the most area he could, he reached into his vest pocket for adhesive bandage. The kind Genma never used, because he hated the way it felt stuck to his skin. After he got the wounds covered, he reluctantly pulled both hands away to perform the seals to activate the ANBU summoning jutsu. If he could keep Genma alive, an ANBU squad was their best bet to get back to safety. If he couldn’t… if he couldn’t, they would have two bodies for disposal.
Carefully he straddled Genma’s limp form, and then, with a tenderness he never showed his best friend when he was conscious, he slid his fingers under the hem of Genma’s bandana, and gently pushed it off. Genma’s dark hair spilled across the yellow curling leaves. Raidou wound the fingers of one hand into Genma’s hair, braced himself with the other. Then he slowly lowered his face and whispered against Genma’s mouth. “Stay with me, you stubborn son of a bitch. You’ve been teasing me for years, and you owe me a kiss.” He brushed his lips against Genma’s, felt the roughness of stubble that wasn’t long enough to show. “Come on, Gen. Don’t go away. I’ll only follow.” And he kissed Genma again, pressing against unresponsive lips. Then he lowered his face and buried it in Genma’s neck. He held his weight off Genma, but stayed close enough to feel Genma’s breathing, to share body warmth. His back was unprotected, but if a threat approached, they would have to go through him to get to Genma. And he waited. For enemies, for darkness, for ANBU… for whatever came next for the two of them.
In other news, I am inordinately pleased with myself, because I replaced the faucet in my bathroom sink. All. By. Myself.

Date: 2006-12-20 06:13 am (UTC)I love the reference to the Deathcab for Cutie song. I totally think of that as Genma and Raidou's theme song.
I shall have to write you a follow up.

Date: 2006-12-20 07:08 am (UTC)loved (maybe not the right word but you get what i'm saying) that genma's been teasing raidou for years and how this is the first (only?) time raidou's gotten the chance to make good on it. *sniffle*
(and wee for dcfc - i think i figgered the line :P)
hooray for changing faucets! you are light years ahead of me!!! :) i put too much jet dry in the dishwasher once and had a massive panic attack because water was pouring out of it and i called the plumbers in a panic. they were nice and didn't charge me for scooping the suds out (amazing how that worked o.0 ) kitty's and water don't mix :P

Date: 2006-12-20 02:19 pm (UTC)she is Genma's player on Spiral.I have this hilarious home repair for independent women book from the 70's. It's got really clear advice, including the don't panic, calm down, you can figure this out reassurances. But the best parts are the pictures.
And the faucet wasn't too bad. I remembered to turn off the water! Getting the old tap out was the hardest part. (Probably easier than fixing a dishwasher.)

Date: 2006-12-20 11:03 pm (UTC)i'm also a fan of someday you will be loved...there are so many possibilities there...
i've come to the conclusion that i'm mechanically challenged. my parents used to call me "dipstick" because i thought the oil was poured in through the tiny dipstick hole *crawls in hole* it was a premonition of what lay ahead...
your book sounds super helpful, maybe i should ask the parents for something like that for christmas *plots*

Date: 2006-12-21 02:43 am (UTC)My book is vintage 70's, (and my other one is 80's maybe?) but having one around is super helpful. The internet is wonderful, but sometimes a girl needs a book.

Date: 2008-05-01 03:31 pm (UTC)Spiral is well worth reading. A number of really good Naruto writers took their talent there, and collaborated on a well thought out world and character driven storyline. Ki and Nezu wrote Raidou and Genma, respectively, and their threads, perhaps above any others at Spiral (ie - the Dead Sexy series) are fantastic.
Scarlet Spiral (http://scarlet_spiral.greatestjournal.com/) - the Thread Index is really helpful.

Date: 2008-05-01 03:40 pm (UTC)Did you play in Spiral? (I figured the uchicha noriko character that I read your oneshot for might be your character there?)
If you have any suggestions of what to read on Scarlet Spiral so I'm not just striking out in the dark like specific threads?

Date: 2008-05-01 03:56 pm (UTC)It is rather a lot, eh?
I'm really biased towards a few of the characters in Spiral - and didn't ever get attached to some of the newer ones.
Genma, Kakashi, Raidou, Asuma, Haruichi, Taisei, Masanori... If you look for a thread that mixes up those characters, you should find some good writing.

Date: 2008-05-01 03:58 pm (UTC)Are you reading Fallen Leaves? :) (or going to play there?)
I know how it is to have favorites I feel that way about FL too >_> heheh

Date: 2008-05-01 04:05 pm (UTC)I think my heart got a little full - does that make sense? And looking at another roster of characters and plots on the scale of Spiral was like looking at really tasty food when you're already full.
Plus, at the time Leaves started - Killing Time was still quite active, and it felt confusing to me to read someone else's RP Kakashi at the same time I was writing my own.

Date: 2008-05-01 04:09 pm (UTC)I was really sad that I only got into KT as it was really not active :( I hope it can have a bit of a revival! I love your Kakashi :) even if KT doesn't come back to it's glory I hope you can still find inspiration for little oneshots with her <3
