Oct. 13th, 2010 02:06 pmI declare today a day of awesome things.
You know what's awesome?
The Chilean miners, of course.
What else is awesome?
When you find new takes on a favorite, and overworked genre.
Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant is an amazing movie that I caught the other day and am re-watching now. Even if you think you're tired of vampire movies, please give this one a try. It's droll, and unexpected and visually awesome. And it has Ken Watanabe.
And I just finished reading Soulless - a fun, sexy steampunk/vampire/werewolf tale with a delightfully ascerbic heroine. I'm downloading gailcarriger's next two books RIGHT NOW.
How about a tasty kind of awesome?
Pumpkin Soup, a recipe from Gluten Free Girl. We had it last night, and the boy and I agreed that it was thoroughly tasty.
And a fannish awesome?
Breathe Into It - an awesomely awesome Inception AU story by
rageprufrock that will warm the cockles of your heart, make you laugh, and remind you that you haven't done your yoga practice yet.
bossymarmalade is consistently awesome, as evidenced by her incisive, insightful and incendiary post about Yoko Ono.
Yoko Ono, by the way, is AWESOME.
I hope your day has some awesome in it.

So. Sign that my boy is growing up? While sweeping the floors, instead of sweeping up lost pieces of lego, I'm sweeping up lost guitar picks. And the eldest is off at university. Unbelievable. Where have the last eighteen years gone?
(Also unbelievable, her sex-ed talk at frosh week said that undergraduates have an average of three sex partners while they're at university. Three? Really? That seems, um, really, really low to me.Apparently I'm a slut, because I thought about it this weekend, and gave up counting after 17.)
Yesterday I had the loveliest surprise: a box of hand-me-down presents from
nezuko , including the lovely blue silk scarf I'm wearing today, an awesome zebra print purse and the Best Rainboots Ever OMG. I can't wait for it to rain.
SGA has spoiled me for other fandoms, a little. I'm loving Inception stories, but the writers are (almost) all unfamiliar, and there's more immature writing out there than I'm accustomed to having to winnow out. I'm reminded that one of the things I love about McShep is the way they are written as adults.
I caught the finale of True Blood on the weekend, and also the premiere of Lost Girl, which a friend is acting in, and has some of the same people behind it as Blood Ties, I think.

Five Things
Sep. 3rd, 2010 07:00 pm- So. Much. Transition. It feels like everyone I know is moving. Mostly farther away.
- Back to work this week, and there have been some heartbreaking moments already. Cancer is awful, y'all.
- Still loving my new e-reader.
- Distressed by the LJ/Facebook bullshit, I have currently disabled comments on my LJ, and removed my paid account notification. I'm pissed off, and cannot afford to have my RL name and fan name linked.
- I have a new fandom OTP: Inception, Arthur/Eames. Be still my heart.
Dear Fellow Slings and Arrows Fans,
I must tell you that whilst at the New Burbage Festival this afternoon, IRL, I almost fell out of my seat as I sat through not one but two extended scenes containing the comedic stylings of disembodied sheep bleating and a stuffed sheep on stage.
As the bleating went on and on (and on) I thought "Haven't they seen Slings and Arrows? Are they really going there?" And they did. At length.

- Call a friend. No. Really. Pick up the phone and call, because even her voicemail will make you feel better. And she'll call back and cheer you up.
- Find something frivolous to read. And if the first one doesn't work, try again. Put down the large book on depression, and download one of the London Review of Books collections of personal ads.
- Walk the dog.
- Practice yoga.
- Eat something.
- Lie down and breathe.
- Watch some tv. Something without serial killers would be a good idea.
- Do the dishes.
- Sit on the back steps. Breathe.
- Keep taking your antidepressants.
- Go to bed at a reasonable hour.
- Trust that this too will pass.
I heard an interview earlier this week with a couple of Canadian university students who collaborated on a project called American Able. It's a project that takes on the traditional images of women's bodies and sexuality (that are perpetuated through advertising campaigns like those of American Apparel) with a series of photos with a disabled model (one of the collaborators).
It's marvelous.
It's marvelous.
So. Waiting with baited breath for George to start interviewing Paul Gross on The Hour.
ETA: Interview over, dead from estrogen induced stroke
OMG, his laugh, and the way he just dissolves into it. And the storytelling. And the following comment on his lack of gun while shooting Due South:
"Everyone else had a gun, I just had a block of wood. So they'd pull out their guns, and I'd pull out my wood."
pause
And they both dissolve into laughter.

Apr. 27th, 2010 01:12 pmI actually had a post started yesterday, and then my laptop overheated and crashed. (Again) I have a afternoon/evening church meeting tonight, and that's the last big thing on my calendar (well, other than Sunday worship) until I start two weeks of study leave.
We're acclimatizing to new household routines - dog-sitting for the next three months. And it was so chilly this morning when I took her for a walk, although I hear it is snowing in Eastern Ontario.
I finished reading Sarah Waters' The Little Stranger yesterday - thoroughly enjoyed it, all creepy as it was. (No, really it was creepy in a don't-want-to-read-it-in-bed kind of way for me.)
And we're in 3 Weeks for Dreamwidth, right? So here: Ask away...

What kind of topics/entries would you like to see me posting about? Any particular questions you've always wanted to ask me but have resisted because the answer would be a huge essay? Ever want to wind me up and watch me go on a particular topic? Anything you've heard me say "I should write that entry about $foo I've been meaning to write" and have been patiently waiting for?
Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on alfalfa, favorite type of underwear, graphic techniques, etc.

suffragettes
Apr. 14th, 2010 10:14 pmIt's funny how things pop up in clusters. A twitter post, and another on my flist about suffragettes, and education/history/propaganda. And then a couple of the old Heritage Minutes were playing on the Documentary Channel tonight. Including this one, which I'm sure you'll remember if you're Canadian and about my age:
That Agnes MacPhail, she was feisty.
That Agnes MacPhail, she was feisty.
Four of my scheduled appointments done for the week. Only two left, and they're both on Friday.
Four days in a row I'm working out of town next week. Yikes!!
Four weeks in a row I'll have worked on my day off.
Four days left until this keynote speaking thing for which I still have only the vaguest plan.
Hmm... maybe that's enough grumbling.
Four patches of daffodils blooming in my garden.
Three yellow school buses in a line.
Two hugs from my teenage daughter when I drove to her school for missing paperwork.
One worship service in the nursing home, with smiles and a warm welcome.

Apr. 13th, 2010 01:34 pmIn my ongoing quest to keep body, mind and soul together, I'm eating lunch. Ok, it's at my desk, and it's 2:30 in the afternoon, and I'm working tonight as well during the day, but still! Lunch! And I actually hauled myself out of bed this morning early enough to do yoga before breakfast and ensuing bedlam.
Oh hell no
Apr. 11th, 2010 01:17 pmSo. Not only did my browser go down twice, and my email programme once while trying to get church paperwork done, now my browser has not recovered the 24 tabs I had open.
Dear Ghost in the Machine: I know it's a lovely Sunday afternoon, and I should be outside enjoying the sunshine, but THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN SOONER.

Accomplishments, I have them!
Apr. 9th, 2010 02:48 pmI've replaced the broken doorknobs on the front door (which was a lot easier than I thought it would be). Had someone in to fix the dryer (not entirely sure if it is fixed, however). I've been to the accountant's to pick up my tax stuff, and the hardware store and the health food store and the bank. And I caught up on paying bills and sent in money and contracts to the national church and receipts to other people and posted a couple of letters.
(And Nezu, when I looked around the messy, messy house and cringed at the thought of the repair guy coming, I thought of you and reminded myself that I was paying him to fix the washer, not pass judgement on my housekeeping skills.)
Later, when there's a kid home to spot me on the ladder, I need to climb up and engage in another round of territorial warfare with the starling trying to nest in my dryer vent. I've got a couple more pieces of screening, and a new roll of duct tape. Fear me, starlings.
So. I might be having bad dreams about paperwork that's not done at work, but I'm sooooo glad I took the day off to get stuff done at home.

lunch break
Apr. 8th, 2010 01:35 pmA little drabble for
kate , and me and all the rest of us too prone to skipping lunch or eating at our desks. Happy Thursday afternoon!
It's a grumbling sort of preening coming from the CSO's corner of the lab. Stabbing at laptop keys and muttering about "two doctorates is overqualified for lunch room monitoring" and "eating at my desk" and "goddamned electrical resistance simulations". But by the time Teyla is at the door, Torren's still damp hand in hers ("Alreadys washed, Uncle Rodney!"), Dr. McKay is ready to go, with a final glare around the room.
Teyla kisses Torren goodbye on his forehead ("See you back home for naptime" and "Awwww, Mama"), and shoulder bumps Rodney before going down the hall, child free. And Rodney hitches Torren onto his hip as they head to the messhall, both chattering at once: "Uncle Ronon caughted a fish as big as ME" and "better grip on our tires, we'll beat Uncle Floppy Hair next time" and "lunch, lunch, lunch, lunch, lunch" echoing down the corridor behind them.

Mar. 20th, 2010 08:07 pmHey, internet denizens! I missed you!
I've been away for the past week, and with non-existant to spotty internet, have mostly stayed offline the whole time. I think an occasional break is good for me anyway. But I missed you.
I missed your recipes and yoga poses, your links and thoughtful, insightful discussions. I missed fandom. I missed your stories and icons and chatter and in-jokes. I missed your comfort and distraction on the evening I was upset. I missed your crackalicious sense of humour.
Last night we were driving home from the night of dancing and drag queens, through the Dundas and Yonge intersection. Well, I was driving, and everyone else was slightly (or more than slightly) sloshing in their seats. Someone asked me something, and I replied "Whatever, because right now I'm totally distracted by the GIANT MOVIE BILLBOARDS". Which are giant. And were showing a preview for Repo Men. (Which I saw today and LOVED, but I'll tell you that later) - And then the RepoMen preview became an ad for the Ste. Marie Among the Hurons Historical Reenactment Village and I said what I really wanted was a movie with Jude Law and Forest Whittaker set in the Historical Reenactment Village, where Jude Law is a historical interpreter and dresses up like a Jesuit, and Forest Whittaker was a tourist and the movie would be all about their Tragic And Forbidden Love. And someone in the backseat said "What movie is she talking about?" and someone else said "No, she's just making it all up as she goes."
And I missed you fandom. Because you are the ones who know how to have that conversation.
As it turns out, I don't actually need a Jude Law/Forest Whittaker movies set in Midland, because RepoMen is simply fucking awesome. I loved it entirely and wholeheartedly from the opening sentence to the last lines of the closing credits, and that's all I'll say here, but there'll be a post about it soon.
Also - A Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is as good as everyone said, and even better, and I loveditloveditloveditlovedit and if you can buy a book this week, it should be that one.
Also, also - I had a great week off, and have about a bazillion tabs open from browsing the back entries in DW; and I don't know if I'll get through the LJ backlog - so if there's something you want me to know, or think I've missed that I'd love, let me know.
